A brief history of Wootten Boatbuilding

Cookham Dean, Berkshire, England

Arthur Wootten was born in 1897; he was the son of a boat builder and had been involved with boats since the age of ten. Using a second hand shed, he began the family business with five pounds,  hiring out punts, skiffs and canoes.  In the twenties the founder's brother, Harry, a boat builder, joined the business. It was at this time the boat-building began in earnest at the yard.  Arthur Wootten senior died in 1943 and the business passed to his sons Arthur and Guy.  A large boat-building shed (which is still in use today) was erected in 1951. Apart from building river craft, they developed a boat rental business.

In 1952 Pat Wootten, the son of Guy, joined the yard at the age of fifteen. He had helped out from an early age ferrying visitors and helping in the yard. By the mid fifties, punting and skiffing had gone into decline as dinghy sailing become more popular. Woottens turned to building performance dinghies like the Flying Fifteen, Merlin Rockets and the National Twelve. In the nineteen eighties Woottens Boatyard introduced their slipper with the GRP hull bottom giving modern durability yet maintaining the timeless beauty of the boat. The skills of traditional boat building have never been in greater demand and Guy Wootten (son of Pat) joined the yard in 1987 after finishing his four year apprenticeship.  When Pat died in 1998, Guy took over the running of the yard and is now joined by his son Lee, being the fifth generation of Woottens to be working at Cookham Dean.  Few boatyards can boast an unbroken history of over 100 years on the same site, but five generations of Woottens have kept traditional boatbuilding alive at Cookham Dean.
